Guys....

I miss my FJ. I haven't even had it a week yet.

Haha. That's bad.

I feel you though, mine was gone for a week once, waiting on parts so I could fix it.

You'll get through it!!

Just got off the phone with the dealership, with some not-so-good news.

Checked the timing chain and pulled the valve cover off to inspect. They found a lot of sludge in the engine due to the previous owners lack of maintenance.

So my options right now are to:
- Replace and only band-aid fix the timing chain before it gets sludged up again.
- Replace the engine to the tune of $6,500-$8,500.
- Get rid of it and try to search for a new FJ to get.

Any thoughts/suggestions? I am going to contact the dealer that I bought it from and see if they are willing to work with me. Keep in mind I bought the vehicle last Monday..

That's a tough one and a shame for a vehicle with so few miles on it.
Part of me thinks that keeping it and replacing the engine would be awesome. You would start fresh and know that the engine would last a very long time.

The scary part is that we all know Toyota motors will run 500K if maintained. If the motor is failing when in reality it's just getting broken-in, how poorly was this truck maintained? What else was neglected and overlooked?

I'd almost be fearful of other skeletons in the closet and want to unload the vehicle for one that has been thoroughly vetted.

This will give you an idea of the mileage on these. Just like the Tacos...

See, I am kinda in the same boat. It does have so few miles that is whats kinda scary to think about.

Everything else seems to be working fine though. The interior and exterior are in great condition, so, if I get a new motor (new Toyota motor at that) it would essentially be like having a brand new vehicle, that I would know would get taken care of and last a while.

I've got some work to do to weigh out the options and see what is smart/cost effective in the long run.

Dang that is a tough situation! Sad to read the thread and see it go from super excited and positive to not so great. I would definitely contact the dealership who sold it. Was it a Toyota one? Because it seems like if it was they would inspect the vehicle before selling it, or at least they should. Sad that the previous owners neglected engine maintenance like oil changes or whatever to make there be sludge. Having to buy a new engine would definitely be a tough bullet to swallow... I would see if the dealership would take it back no questions asked and then maybe get a different FJ if you can find one.

However here is a used motor from a Tacoma (same as the FJ engine) with basically the same mileage on it as your FJ but it has a warranty with it. Something to consider...

Well. (Sorry for the long post, there will be a picture at the end to entice you to finish. :) )

After driving up to meet the guys to switch for the sliders, I drove home and all was fine....

Until later that night. I went to go get Tacos (because who doesn't love tacos), got down the street and the check engine light came on, along with the other 3. Thought it might have been the gas cap because I got gas during the whole drive up to get the sliders. Well tightened the gas cap and the lights were still on. It still drove just fine and didn't seem any different so I wasn't TOO worried. (Although not happy, one day into owning it and the lights come on for no reason)

I went and got it checked the next day at the parts store and it threw a few different codes. Tried to do some research to figure out what was going on and what the codes meant. Well later that day after not finding out a whole lot, the lights randomly went back off. I cleaned the MAF and replaced the air filter. Also a taillight was out so got that taken care of. Anyway, drove around and it was fine for a bit. Then parked it, thinking whatever it was, was all good. Well went back to run an errand, not even down the street and all the lights came back on. So at this point pretty ticked and confused what was even going on. No consistency with the lights.

Fast forward to later that night. Checked fuses to make sure they were good. When I started it back up the lights were all off. Drove about 70ish miles to meet up with another FJ person to borrow a scanner and the light was off the entire time.

Drove to work and it was fine this morning, no lights on, drove fine. Got to work and parked, had to go back out to pick someone up who slid in a ditch (it snowed, picture later after this annoying long post) no lights the whole time until I got back to my parking spot, as soon as I was about to put it in Park, all the lights came back on. Real annoyed at this point and even more confused. Well went to leave work and no lights were on, nor did they turn on the whole way home....

SO, yeah. Don't know what's up. Sucks since there is no consistency with the lights coming on or off. Just seems to do it at random times.

Here is a picture of Barney in its first snow with me this morning. FJ's look pretty damn good.

My '08 used to pop all the lights in after tough off reading. Lots of codes, it they would eventually reset after a day. I learned to live with the lights, when they'd pop on.

Never had performance issues, but would keep a close eye. We believed it was a loose wire on a sensor.

New engine? ? New FJ? What if you just wash the engine well, change good oils everywhere and read the codes (what they are)? FJ shows the engine light almost immediately if there is anything a little off. Not so serious.
